When your dog licks you it is a way for your dog to show love and affection

. If your dog gives you a few quick licks in the morning when you get up or in the evening when you you return from work that is okay. If your dog is engaging in excessive licking that is nit okay and that can be signs of other problems. In this article I would like to highlight some of the reasons for excessive licking.

First, your dog may be licking you excessively because they are stressed out. This licking can become an obsessive behavior in stressed dogs. If your dog licks himself too much it can lead to hair loss and at the same time a dog that is constantly licking will be a messy slobbering dog.

Secondly, skin allergies or fleas can cause excessive licking. Your dog may be very itchy and thinks licking will stop the itch.

Third, your dog may be licking themselves because of itchy dry skin or allergies. If they are licking their paws it can result from irritated paws resulting from bad weather such as snow and ice and the salt on the roads to combat the ice.

Fourth, older dogs may lick themselves where they are hurting from arthritis. It is a good idea to have your dog checked by your family vet if you notice this excessive licking.

Lastly, your dog may be licking too much just because they think you like it and they art trying to please you. Stop saying isn't this cute and tell your dog a simple NO! when they keep licking you.
